Las Cruces has ranked in the top 5 for the last several years on Forbes' list of "Best Small Metro Area for Business and Careers," including a #1 ranking in 2002 and #2 ranking in 2005 and 2006. The rankings were based on "job growth, earned income, and "a measure of activity in critical technologies that foster future growth. As recently as April,2007 Forbes Rated Las Cruces as 8th in its ratings of the
Ten Best Smaller Metros For Business And Careers.

Growth has resulted in increasing Gross Receipts Tax Revenue, and our City has experienced multiple years of budget surpluses. This enables our city to improve services and quality of life. Today, unemployment is near 4%, the lowest level in the history of our City. This year we have added 1400+ high-tech and manufacturing jobs to the Las Cruces economy. More people are working and earning higher wages than ever before. The median household income increased 14.6% in the last year alone. Our standard of living has significantly improved.
Water is the most prized commodity in the Southwest. WE'VE GOT WATER! The Mesilla Valley is blessed with three main water sources: 2- aquifer systems, plus surface water from the Rio Grande. It is unlikely that water will be a limiting resource in our community's continued economic growth and development.
